SoleRunner

Privacy Policy

Effective September 23, 2026

SoleRunner is made by Sean Brandon. This policy explains what the app stores and where.

What SoleRunner records

When you record a run, SoleRunner uses your iPhone's or Apple Watch's GPS and, on the watch, the heart rate and motion sensors to build the run: route, distance, pace, splits, heart rate, cadence and calories. Runs are saved to Apple Health on your device. Runs you import from a fitness data export or from Apple Health are stored the same way.

Where it lives

Everything is stored on your device. Nothing leaves it unless you sign in.

If you sign in, your runs, routes, titles, notes and goals are backed up to a private cloud account hosted on Amazon Web Services in the United States and synced to other devices where you sign in. Data is scoped to your account and is not shared with anyone. Route GPS data is stored as an encrypted file in that account.

Sign-in

You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password. With Apple or Google, SoleRunner receives your email address (or Apple's private relay address) and an account identifier; it never receives your Apple or Google password. Sign-in is used only to identify your backup.

Voices

Natural voice announcements are generated by Amazon Polly. Only the words being spoken, such as "Mile 3, 7 26", are sent. No health or location data is included.

Route names

To describe a route ("Starting at Piedmont Ave in Midtown…"), the start and turnaround points of a route are sent to Apple's Maps geocoding service. Apple's Maps privacy terms apply.

Live sharing

If you share a run live, the phone sends your current position, route so far, distance, pace, time and heart rate to your cloud account every 10 seconds while you run. Only friends you have accepted in the app can watch, and only inside the app; there is no public web page. The data is deleted 7 days after the run.

Friends

If you add friends (by swapping six-character friend codes in the app), they can see your display name, when you start a run, your run live while it's in progress, and the summaries of your recent runs: date, distance, time, pace and, if you recorded one, the route. You can turn off "Share my runs with friends" at any time or remove a friend. There is no messaging between users. To be told when a friend starts a run, the app registers for push notifications; the notification token is stored with your account and deleted with it.

Safety contacts

Safety contacts are people you pick from your own Contacts. Their names and numbers stay on your phone; SoleRunner only fills in a text message (that you're heading out, plus your friend code so they can follow in the app) for you to send.

Purchases

SoleRunner Pro is sold through Apple's in-app purchase system. Apple handles payment; SoleRunner never sees your payment details.

What SoleRunner does not do

No advertising. No analytics or tracking SDKs. No selling or sharing of data. Health data is never used for marketing, in line with Apple's HealthKit rules.

Deleting your data

Delete any run from its page or by swiping it in the list; it is removed from the device, from Apple Health if SoleRunner recorded it, and from your cloud account. To delete your whole account and everything backed up, use Settings › Account › Delete account in the app, or email the address below.
